Hello everyone,
this is the first in my little feature series I'm doing over the next ten days, all dedicated to my favourite day of the year- Halloween. Now as the reigning Halloqueen/Hallopreme, it is only fitting that I should share some ideas on how to have the spoopiest Halloween you've ever had.
Now I know some people really don't have a tolerance for gore and guts and spookiness, which is why I have decided to dedicate my first post to the faint hearted, because everyone should enjoy Halloween!
Here are my top five, fright free films for you to enjoy on October 31st:
- Frankenweenie (2012, Tim Burton)
I mean, was this list going to exist without Tim Burton? Frankenweenie is a pretty underrated animated film. The entire movie is in black and white, which is something I really enjoy about it and the narrative is a nod to the classic, and very similarly titled Mary Shelley story, Frankenstein. The film tells the tale of eleven year old Victor, who has an interest in film making and is not like the other kids in school. He has a strong love for his pupper Sparky, but when tragedy strikes, he tries to use the power of science to bring his pupper back. Does he succeed? I guess you'll have to watch to find out. Frankenweenie is family friendly, so if you have younger siblings or children then they can watch it to and really enjoy a Halloween flick.
- Hocus Pocus (1993, Kenny Ortega)
Is there anything better than old school Disney? Hocus Pocus tells the story of three sisters, who also happen to be witches, who are accidentally resurrected in Salem one All Hallows Eve, intent on stealing the souls of the town's children in order to retain their youth. I have such great memories of watching this when I was younger and it actually sparked my interest in the Salem Witch Trials. It is a film that everyone should watch, at least one Halloween night of their lives.
- Addams Family Values (1993, Barry Sonnenfeld)
Well, it seems 1993 was a LIT year for Halloween films, am I right? Now, you could watch any Addams Family themed show or film to get in the Halloween spirit, but this is my favourite Addams Family themed anything. I guess if you haven't seen any of them then first of all, WHO ARE YOU? and secondly, maybe do a little watching of other stuff first. However, if you, like me, are an adopted Addams Family member then you will know this is the one where Wednesday and Pugsley are sent to a very happy-go-lucky summer camp, much to their dismay, and Uncle Fester finds himself in a ~scary~ situation!
- Halloweentown (1998, Duwayne Dunham)
Remember every Halloween when Disney Channel would marathon the Halloweentown films and you'd binge eat candy and you wanted Aggie to teach you to be a witch? No? Okay... But seriously, this is a kid friendly, cult classic, Disney Halloween piece of perfection. It is not only one of the best Disney Channel original movies ever made, it is one of the best Halloween movies ever made. All you need is a bowl of popcorn, a bowl of chocolate, a bowl of other sweets and a giant pumpkin latte, and you are set for the greatest Halloween movie night!
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993, Tim Burton)
Would you believe 1993 is at it again? No Halloween movie list would be complete without a little Jack and Sally. What does this classic have that makes it so great? Songs *cue THIS IS HALLOWEEN* a Pumpkin King, and much like Frankenweenie, a little ghostly dog, called Zero. My favourite thing about this film is that it has a theme of Christmas in it, which is so fitting for October 31st because it's both Halloween but the eve of the acceptable date to be festive, November 1st!
So that is it, my top five, fright free films for both the faint hearted and Halloween lovers out there, let me know what you thought of these films and which fright free films are your favourite?
Until my next post, stay spooky,
Love, Aimee :) x
