So it's been a while since I last updated you guys on my life, and that's mostly because I've been laying about crying over how much I hate the weather whilst reading book after book. The last post I wrote was about my time seeing 5SOS at Wembley (you know, the time Michael really was kinda hot) and I guess it was inevitable that my next post would be dedicated to them too.
And what is this post all about? Well, today the boys dropped their latest single 'She's Kinda Hot' and the world has been pretty much freaking out ever since!
After a very failed attempt at hearing the song premier on Shazam Top 20 this morning, I was finally blessed to hear it via Spotify and it seems the wait was sure as hell worth it. Of course, like a few people, when I saw the title of the single I was sceptical. Thoughts such as 'what's the deal?' 'has the girl been downgraded from looking perfect to being sort of alright?' 'how is this reflecting their deeper direction?' crossed my mind. But when I heard this new single for the first time, any anxieties I had about 'She's Kinda Hot' were obliterated.
Here's what the single sounded like for me:
'OOh it's acoustic'
'OMG LUKE'
'Ok, Ok the girl's kinda hot I get it'
'Oh she put you on meds, this is like Permanent Vacation. I love Permanent Vacation'
'I really love the little bits in the background'
'Oh this isNT ACOUSTIC'
'Is that an elephant noise?'
'SHUT UP ASHTON'
'THIS IS REALLY NOT ACOUSTIC!'
'THE NEW BROKEN SCENE OMG IT ALL MAKES SENSE'
'HELP HELP HELP ME! There's a guitar solo'
'OH MY GOD ASHTON HAS A SOLO'
'I'm not all right though'
'They sound like footie lads chanting'
'Where was this song when I was 15?'
'Well, this will be in my head all day'
'ok, let me replay that 72 times'
She's Kinda Hot introduces itself as a pretty laid out single. There are several talking parts layered in the background, including reiterating that this chick is a 'itty little bit hot' along with wild giggles and the thoughts of 'big plans.' The chorus is sharp and anthemic, think Teenagers by MCR, the kind of song any teenager wants to blare out of their windows as a great big fuck you to the world that might try and dampen their dreams. The guitar solo that comes in the second half of the song is even more uplifting for the 'new broken scene.' What the song is more than anything is a massive punch in the face to doubters of the band within the pop/rock pop/punk scene. It showcases the best of the guys' musical abilities, and tests out the side of them they've been dying to
bring to life. It is a song that throws them within the realm of the bands they, and I grew up with. There's a sprinkle of Sum 41 and All Time Low with the added flavour of John Feldmann, who 5SOS have spent the best part of this year working with. As a taster of what is to come from their sophomore album, 'She's Kinda Hot' definitely parachutes away from the 'band that supported One Direction' they're so wildly labelled as, and throws me back in the deep end of fangirling once more.
If you want to hear the song for yourself then here it is:
'She's Kinda Hot' is available to stream on Spotify and is also available for download on iTunes
Thank you for reading,
Aimee :) x
